Research on traditional basketry in Chiloé

Research conducted in 2020, working with reed basket makers in Chiloé to record their basketry work and fiber identification.

The types of weaving used by the basket makers of Chiloé were identified, and a step-by-step weaving manual was created so that anyone who wants to learn can do so.

I never thought I'd be able to make a book with my work. They also helped me learn how to sell online through Instagram, which has allowed me to sell more in other regions and reach more people.

It was such a wonderful experience and one of great appreciation, a very nice experience.

I always carry my book when we get together with the other basket makers...

Silvia Mendoza,
Indigenous Association of Women Artisans of the General Lagos Commune, Arica

Working with the Herencia y Futuro Foundation has been an extremely rewarding experience. The team was not only made up of extraordinary people, but also nationally recognized craft experts. It was a privilege to share this work in my beloved General Lagos district, a place that represents the beginning of Chile and needs support in various areas.

We've fulfilled the dream of many ranchers and artisans by creating a bibliographic collection that preserves the photographs and stories of our community's traditional clothing. This project allows us to share our rich history with the world, and especially with future generations.

I am immensely proud to have been part of this process and very grateful for the opportunity. If I had the chance to collaborate with the Herencia y Futuro Foundation again, I wouldn't hesitate. Their commitment, love for what they do, professionalism, and ability to adapt to working conditions at more than 4,000 meters above sea level are admirable.
